yin yogaYin yoga combines the teachings of Indian Hatha yoga with the ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy of yin and yang. Often our busy lives can be a little too full of active Yang energy making it difficult to find time for ourselves and to be focused. Yin Yoga is the perfect antidote - this slow, passive practice helps us to find stillness in our yoga and within ourselves.
During a Yin yoga class we hold the poses for longer, we use props (bolsters, blocks, straps, blankets, eye pillows), usually anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Instead of actively stretching our muscles as we do in more dynamic styles of yoga, we learn to surrender to gravity, allowing our muscles and connective tissues to passively lengthen and stretch. This practice also helps to quieten our monkey mind!

University of the 3rd Age (U3A)
Gentle Hatha Yoga Wednesdays (11am-12pm) Townsville Sports Precinct Redpath St North Ward Hatha yoga is a gentle traditional style that focusses on breathwork, slow mindful poses and encourages you to connect with the mind/body and breath. This class will focus on lots of modifications during the class for different levels. For example, we can use chairs to support for some poses.
If you have any serious health issues e.g. heart conditions, recent surgery etc it would be helpful if you could come 10 minutes earlier (so we can chat about this, and I can modify the poses for you). NB: If you need a wheelie walker or have any other serious mobility issues this class may not be suitable and perhaps an alternative could be offered at another time. To join Jan in this class you will need to sign up to U3A Townsville (you will get access to many other classes as well for a minimal joining fee). |
